What an Egress Window Is and Why Basements Need One
An egress window is a below-grade basement window large enough for a person to climb out of in an emergency and for a firefighter to climb in. It is paired with a window well outside, a corrugated or masonry enclosure that holds back the surrounding soil and creates the open space the window swings into.

Why This Is Not a DIY Job
Buying a window and a well kit and renting a saw looks like a way to save a few thousand dollars. Cutting a load-bearing foundation wall is where that math falls apart.
The opening removes a section of wall that was carrying load. A header or lintel has to go in above it, sized and set correctly, to carry that load around the new hole. Get the cut oversized, crooked, or missing its lintel and the opening can crack, and that cracking can travel through the rest of the wall. At that point you are not saving on an egress window, you are paying for foundation crack repair cost on top of the original job.
The excavation adds its own risk. Digging a deep hole tight against a foundation wall, without hitting a utility line or undermining the footing, is not a casual weekend task. And the drainage tie-in has to actually move water away or the whole thing leaks. This is the kind of work where the failure mode is a damaged foundation and a wet basement, which is why it belongs with a qualified contractor.
