How Each Method Works
Interior Drainage
Interior waterproofing doesn’t stop water from entering the foundation wall - it captures water that has already entered and routes it out before it spreads across the floor.
The system:
- A perimeter channel is saw-cut into the concrete floor along the wall base (typically 4 inches wide)
- The channel is excavated to the footing level
- A perforated drain pipe collects water migrating through the wall-floor joint and weep holes in the wall
- The channel connects to a sump pit at the lowest point
- A sump pump discharges water outside the foundation
Water migrating through the wall face hits the drainage channel before reaching the floor. The wall itself may still absorb some moisture, which matters for finishes - a drainage wall panel (dimple mat on the wall face) directs wall moisture down to the channel and creates a dry surface for finishing.
Exterior Waterproofing
Exterior waterproofing treats the outside face of the foundation wall and intercepts water before it contacts the wall:
- Excavation to footing depth (full depth - typically 7-10 feet for a full basement)
- Cleaning and inspection of the exterior wall face
- Application of waterproofing membrane - liquid-applied rubberized coating or factory-manufactured sheet system
- Drainage board (dimple mat on exterior face) to direct water down to the drain tile
- Perforated drain tile at the footing
- Gravel backfill drainage layer
- Native soil backfill and landscape restoration
The membrane prevents water from contacting the wall. Drainage board and tile catch any water that reaches the membrane and direct it away from the footing.

When Interior Drainage Makes Sense
Active water intrusion without excavation budget - Interior drainage resolves chronic wet basement problems for most homes at 30-50% of the exterior cost. For most homeowners, this is the recommended starting point.
Finished basement - Opening the perimeter floor channel is far less disruptive than excavating outside and requires minimal interior demo.
Properties where excavation is impractical - Homes with landscaping, patios, decks, neighboring structures, or utility lines close to the foundation make exterior excavation expensive or impossible.
Good soil drainage, poor drainage at joint - If your primary water entry is at the wall-floor joint (not through the full wall thickness), interior drainage directly addresses the entry point.
When Exterior Waterproofing Makes Sense
New construction - The most cost-effective time to waterproof is before backfill. Adding an exterior membrane and drain tile during construction costs a fraction of the retrofit cost.
Major excavation already planned - If you’re doing a full foundation repair that requires excavation, or a major addition or renovation that involves exposing the exterior wall, adding waterproofing at that time makes economic sense.
Severely deteriorated exterior wall - Some older foundations with significant masonry deterioration or failed prior treatments benefit from direct exterior access for repair and membrane application.
Combined with structural repair - When foundation wall cracks require exterior epoxy injection or exterior structural repair, combining waterproofing with structural work during the same excavation is efficient.
The Honest Reality
The waterproofing industry has a history of overselling exterior waterproofing to homeowners who don’t need it. The following is broadly true among building professionals:
- Interior drainage resolves active water intrusion in the vast majority of residential basements
- Exterior waterproofing adds value mainly when excavation is already happening
- The wall itself will still absorb some moisture with interior-only waterproofing, which matters for certain finishes
- Sump pump reliability (including a battery backup) is more important to a dry basement than which waterproofing method is used
Contractors who immediately recommend exterior excavation without discussing interior alternatives first, or who dismiss interior drainage as “just managing the symptom,” are often working from a higher-margin recommendation rather than the most practical solution for your situation.
Questions to Ask Any Contractor
- Is the water entry at the wall-floor joint, through the wall face, or through specific cracks - and how did you determine that?
- Would interior drainage resolve this problem, and if not, why specifically?
- If exterior is recommended, what is the specific condition that makes interior drainage inadequate?
- What warranty do you offer, and is it transferable to the next owner?
